Julia Roberts Spotted with Python Skin Clutch

When someone looks back at the trends of 2008 and ’09 for handbags, one style that’ll stick out is python. Whether real python on top designer bags or leather patterned as python on more affordable brands, python was popular. Snakeskin seems to come in and out every few years, with snakeskin patterned pants being popular earlier this decade, which can be read in more detail in an article at Salon.com about snakeskin clothing dating back nine years. At the moment, python skin on handbags either displays the natural look of snakeskin scales or it has been dyed. For the latter, the dyed snakeskin can either retain the type of natural pattern or it can make the scales one solid color.

Celebrities, of course, are the first ones to display the top trends in public and off the runways. Julia Roberts was recently seen with a python skin clutch which, to those new on handbag terminology, is simply a small handbag, with or without a strap, that is meant for carrying your basics, such as cash, cards, keys, and cosmetics (call it the alliterative four basics for women) and take up less space than a handbag. Although we don’t know if Roberts is channeling style from 2000, which was probably when she last had a hit movie, or being trendy, but the handbag itself is a more low-key style than the bold color python handbags seen on other celebs.

If you’re looking for Roberts’ style, various discount and wholesale retailers have this same look you can replicate for less. While a high-end designer brand like LAI seen on Roberts is somewhat different, a more affordable handbag or clutch with python skin print will be leather or patent leather patterned with snakeskin. To keep with the variety of styles offered, these imitation python handbags and clutches, as well as wallets, come in low-key colors like Roberts’ and in bright colors, such as in the clutch seen above.
