The world of fashion and the world of celebrity are intertwined very tightly. A major reason for this is due to the high fashion that comes along with major events like movie premieres, awards shows and charity events. This is nothing new – celebrities have been looked at as beacons of new styles and trends for many decades, but there is a new element to the industry that has been built out of this idea. Celebrities are becoming not just the wearer, but the designer of clothing. Putting an actress’s name on the tag inside a dress or handbag is just as powerful as putting Gucci or Prada in the same place.
Look at Victoria Beckham for example. A former music star (she was Posh Spice in wildly successful The Spice Girls music group), Victoria married David Beckham, arguably the most famous soccer player in the world. The two began modeling, using their celebrity status to secure major endorsement deals. Victoria then turned her attention to designing her own fashion line, instead of wearing clothing designed by others. She has turned this endeavor into her main revenue stream. Furthermore, critics and shoppers alike have praised her designer handbags and accessories.
This has become a model that others have followed in, including Jessica Simpson, whose makeup and fashion brand has made Ms. Simpson hundreds of millions of dollars. The newest celebrity getting into the fashion game is Rachel Bilson, widely known from TV show The OC, but currently starring in Hart of Dixie. According to the Belfast Telegraph, Rachel has released a line of handbags following her success in the footwear world:
“Rachel co-designed the 13-piece accessories range with celebrity stylist Nicole Chavez and satchels, totes and clutches are included. The former O.C. actress has created mostly sports-inspired bags priced at an affordable $79.98. The styles are available in bright colors such as neon pinks and forest greens.”
What celebrity will be the next to release a collection of handbags?
