A few months ago, we discussed a new trend in this blog – the connection between professional sports and high fashion. Specifically, a story from Slate referenced new products that the National Football League (NFL) was aiming directly at women, both fans and not. These items included nail polish in team colors and team clothing in more fashionable styles and cuts. Now, there is one group using a very interesting part of Super Bowl XLVI to raise money, all the while helping female football fans get a special piece of football history.
According to an article in the Indianapolis Star, People for Urban Progress (PUP) – a group that helps boost living conditions in urban areas, is repurposing banners, signs and other materials from Super Bowl XLVI as fashion:
“More than five miles (or 26,400 feet) of signs and banners from this year’s Super Bowl have been given new life — transformed into shower curtains, handbags, wallets and more. And now, the public can own a little piece of the big game. The items will be auctioned on eBay starting [today]. But it’s not just banners and signs that were repurposed. PUP also salvaged some fence wrap and fabric mesh used by the NFL and local organizing committee, much of it decorated with NFL, team and city logos and artwork.”
The article says that PUP worked with local designers to take the material and turn it into the auction items. The group also salvaged the material used to cover an unused stadium, turning it into fashion handbags, purses and other items that were sold for a solid amount of funds:
“After the first 1,000 bags were sold for $70,000, PUP invested the proceeds in the design, production and construction of new shade structures. PUP also has rescued the seats from the old Bush Stadium and is refurbishing them for use around the community…”
Do you think that the NFL should start getting involved in this type of project?
