Ah, the world of designer western style handbags. There’s something so luxurious about walking around with the types of purses that celebrities carry around in their daily lives. Of course, a lot of these handbags cost a pretty penny that usually goes to a boutique or the designer straight away. However, there is a group that uses the sale of designer handbags as a way to promote a very worthy cause.
Every year, the Island Coast AIDS Network gets a much needed boost of funding from the Handbag Happy Hour, a massive sale of a few hundred celebrity handbags donated by many stars themselves. According to an article in Naples Daily News, this year’s total cash draw doubled that of last year’s take:
“Over 250 designer and celebrity handbags were purchased and bid upon during the event which was held at the Miromar Design Center in Estero. All funds raised from the Handbag Happy Hour go towards providing vital support services to ICAN clients such as food, transportation and counseling to over 400 HIV/AIDS infected individuals and their families in Southwest Florida.”
Besides the amount of money provided to the Island Coast AIDS Network, one of the most impressive elements of the Handbag Happy Hour were the celebrities who donated their handbags to the auction for sale:
“Celebrity purse donations played a big part of the fund raising success with donations sent by such stars as Reba McEntire, Gwyneth Paltrow, Taylor Swift, Kim Basinger, Florence Henderson, Glenn Close and others. In addition to the celebrity donations CHICO’S designer Michael Chase created a one-of-a-kind bag for the live auction and an additional one-of-a-kind creation was also donated by Naples purse designer Pam Durkin. The collection of donated purses from retailers, designers, celebrities and individuals surrounded the design center atrium and kept participants’ involved for four hours in silent and live auctions.”
