Protecting your handbag is one of the most important things to consider when you are carrying one around. We carry a number of essential and personal items in our designer handbags – money, credit cards, makeup, personal identification, etc. – so making sure our bags are properly protected is crucial to our own sense of security. There are a number of ways that you can keep your bag and its contents away from criminals that we have discussed in this blog before. However, carrying a handbag just got more legal protection in England.
According to an article from The Telegraph, a judge has ruled that handbags are vital to a woman’s security, as well as her convenience. This decision came after a lawyer for the defendant said that his client’s theft of a purse caused nothing more than “inconvenience” for its owner:
“Dismissing his claims, Her Honour Judge Zoe Smith, said the victim was often left suffering from stress, anxiety and fear, adding that the crime should not be trivialised. Her comments came during a hearing at Reading Crown Court where a 34-year-old man had pleaded guilty to repeatedly stealing handbags.”
The primary focus of the judge’s comments focused on how difficult it can be to piece your life back together when personal items are stolen, like phones and credit cards. In the article, the judge says that a woman’s safety is compromised when a purse is stolen, sometimes leaving the victim stranded in dangerous areas:
“She said: ‘Her phone is taken, her cards, her money to get a cab is taken, her keys to the door of her house. Then there is the fear of anyone coming to break into the house. It’s a terrible thing to do and girls are left stranded on their own.’”
This story is important for women who love their handbags – make sure you keep yours safe, no matter where you are. If yours does get stolen, there’s at least one judge who has your back!
